While campaigning in Saxony at Rossbach, Frederick II of Prussia left his brother Duke August-Wilhelm of Bevern to hold Silesia, where Austrian General Franz Leopold Nadasdy besieged Schweidnitz. When the Duke of Bevern was defeated nearby, the fortress fell after seven weeks yielding 7,000 prisoners. The Austrians then concentrated for battle days later at Breslau.
