Afghan ruler Ahmad Shah Durrani was returning home from the sack of Delhi in January when his force was attacked by Baba Deep Singh and he sent his son Timur Shah, Governor of Lahore, to punish the Sikhs. A few miles to the north of Amritsar at Gohalwar, the massively outnumbered Sikhs drove off the Afghans, although General Attal Khan slew Baba Deep.
