Shapur I of Sassanid Persia continued the invasion of Roman Syria commenced by his father Ardashir. The Persians had conquered the important cities of Hatra, Nisibis abd Carrhae, when the Roman Empire was plagued with the internal wars between pretenders to the throne. Teenage Roman Emperor Gordian III sent his father-in-law Timesitheus, who routed the Persians west of Nisibis at Resaena (modern Ras al-Ayn, Syria), effectively recovering Syria and Mesopotamia. Timesitheus then died andlater Gordian was defeated at Misiche (244) and murdered by his troops.
