Following the murder of Roman Emperor Severus Alexander in 235, the Thracian Gaius Julius Maximinus was proclaimed Emperor by his soldiers. With support from the Rhine armies he marched on Rome, but at Aquileia, at the head of the Adriatic, the claimant’s army was defeated by the Senate with heavy losses. His troops then mutinied and murdered Maximinus and his son.
