After Roman victory in Syria at Resaena in 243, the teenage Emperor Gordian III attempted to march on the Persian capital at Ctesiphon. West of Baghdad at Misiche (somewhere near modern Fallujah), he suffered a decisive defeat and was killed by his troops at the instigation of <b> Philip the Arab</b>. The usurper was proclaimed emperor and made peace with Shapur I.
