To take pressure off the British in Madras, Governor Robert Clive of Bengal sent Colonel Francis Forde south from Calcutta to support Raja Ananda Raj against the French under Herbert de Brienne Comte de Conflans. Forde and the Raja’s infantry routed and scattered the French on the Godaveri near Rajahmundry, then continued south against the city of Masulipatam.
