Three years after the British disaster at Monongahela, Brigadier John Forbes led a fresh advance on the French at Fort Duquesne (modern Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania). A patrol by Major James Grant was surrounded and suffered heavy losses (14 September). By the time a full attack was prepared, French Captain Francois-Marie de Lignery blew up the fort and fled.
