Returning to Saxony after victory at Zorndorf in August, Frederick II of Prussia advanced against a superior Austrian army under Marshal Leopold von Daun at Dresden. Frederick was surprised in a dawn attack further east at Hochkirch and only just managed to escape after massive losses in men and guns. Von Daun also suffered heavy losses and eventually withdrew.
