Counter-attacking across the Rhine through Hesse, French Duke Charles of Soubise secured victory at Sandershausen, northeast of Kassel (23 July) and was later attacked at nearby Lutterberg by a Prussian-British force under General Christoph Ludwig von Oberg. Soubise won a decisive victory, but failed to follow up and was eventually replaced by Marquis Louis de Contades.
