Advancing up the Nile to recapture the Sudan, General Sir Herbert Kitchener’s Anglo-Egyptian force turned up the Atbara and met a much larger Mahdist army under Emir Mahmoud. Attacking against a thorn-bush stockade near Nakheila, Kitchener inflicted a major defeat, with over 2,000 Dervishes killed, and continued his march towards Omdurman.
