In a notoriously contentious incident, the American warship Maine blew up in Havana Harbour, Cuba, killing 260 crew. While America blamed a Spanish mine and Spain blamed an explosion of coal gas, the incident triggered a war, which immortalised the slogan <i>"Remember the Maine"</i> and eventually gave the United States Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Philippines and Guam.
