Withdrawing west across Saxony to meet the Allies after defeat at Kolin (18 June), Frederick II of Prussia left his brother Duke August-Wilhelm and General Hans Karl von Winterfeldt to hold an Austrian advance into Silesia. At Moys (modern Zgorzelec) near Gorlitz, Winterfeld was overwhelmed and killed. Duke August-Wilhelm was soon defeated near Schweidnitz.
