Marquis Louis de Montcalm marching south from Ticonderoga took a large French and Indian force against Fort William Henry, at the head of Lake George in eastern New York. After heavy bombardment, Colonel George Monro surrendered in return for safe withdrawal, but the garrison were treacherously massacred by the Indians. Montcalm destroyed the fort and withdrew.
