As German forces swept through Belgium, the British Expeditionary Force led by Sir John French found itself facing a massively superior army under Alexander von Kluck around Mons, west of Namur. The British fought a bold delaying action but, with the French defeated at Charleroi, they began the Retreat from Mons through Le Cateau towards the Marne.
