As Austrian commander Count Franz Conrad von Hotzendorf invaded eastern Poland, his northern force (First Army) under General Victor von Dankl moving towards Lublin clashed head-on to the south of Krasnik with the Fourth Russian Army under Baron Salza. The battle raged for the following few days. The Russian armies were driven back and a few days later other Austrians further east repulsed the Russians around Komárow.
