While Russia’s invasion of eastern Prussia stalled in the north after Gumbinnen, General Aleksander Samsonov to the south advanced against the German XX Corps of Friedrich von Scholtz at Orlau-Frankenau (near Olsztyn, Poland). After severe fighting, the Germans fell back southwest on Tannenberg, where von Scholtz’s delaying action helped ensure a brilliant German victory.
