After an incident outside Manila at San Juna del Monte, provoked by Colonel John Stotsenburg’s Nebraskans against Colonel Luciano San Miguel, fighting broke out in Manila and part of the city was burned. The insurgents were repulsed at a cost of over 230 American and 500 Filipino casualties, opening a bitter war which continued with an attack on Caloocan.
