Emile Gentil determined to avenge the French disaster in July at Niellim and marched north from Fort Archambault along the Chari against Muslim leader Rabih az-Zubayr. At Kouno, southeast of Lake Chad, the <i>"Black Sultan"</i> was badly beaten. Early the following year, Gentil supported a combined French force which finally defeated and killed Rabih further north at Kousséri.
