At the start of the war, American commander Arthur MacArthur advanced a few miles north of Manila against the key railway terminus at Caloocan. General Henry W. Lawton took the town by assault after a heavy naval bombardment in the first full-scale action of the war. However, Philippine General Antonio Luna eluded defeat and withdrew north through Polo to Malolos.
