During British reconquest of the Sudan, General Sir Herbert Kitchener sent a flying column of British and Sudanese troops under General Sir Archibald Hunter forward from Merowi against the Nile railhead at Abu Hamed. The Mahdist troops were driven out, with 300 killed and commander Muhammad al-Zayn captured, and Kitchener continued on towards the Atbara.
