Manoeuvring against the Austrians after a Prussian defeat in Silesia at Landshut (26 June), Frederick II of Prussia tried to divert his rivals by besieging and bombarding Dresden, held by General Johann Sigismund von Macquire. Austrian Marshal Leopold von Daun advanced to relieve the city and, with Silesia under threat, Frederick withdrew and marched to Liegnitz.
