The reputed first British action of the war saw the cruiser Astraea bombard Dar es Salaam in German East Africa to destroy the naval wireless. Governor Heinrich Schnee blew up the station and surrendered the city, which was later reoccupied by German forces. It was eventually recaptured by British General Jan Smuts (3 September 1916) during the Morogoro Offensive.
