With Federal forces in central Mexico retreating after Torréon and Paredón, Venustiano Carranza sent Pánfilo Natera, and later Francisco (Pancho) Villa, against stubbornly held Zacatecas. After ten days of bombardment the ruined city fell by storm, with perhaps 6,000 Federal troops killed in the costliest defeat of the war. Carranza then overthrew President Victoriano Huerta.
