As German forces swept into Belgium through Liège, French Commander Joseph Joffre sent General Louis Bonneau into German-occupied Alsace where he captured Altkirch and Muhlhausen. General Josias von Heeringen then counter-attacked in force and Bonneau withdrew into France. He was replaced by General Paul Pau, who led a fresh advance a week later into Lorraine.
