A British naval squadron under Captain Arthur Forrest attempting to intercept a French convoy off northern Santo Domingo was attacked by Admiral Guy-Francois de Kersaint near Cap Francais (modern Cap Haitien). Both sides suffered heavy damage in a severe action and, when Forrest withdrew to Jamaica for repairs, the French convoy sailed safely for France.
