On the offensive in Hesse after victory during 1758 at Sandershausen and Lutterberg, French Duke Victor-Francois of Broglie occupied Bergen, northeast of Frankfurt, and came under attack by Prussians, Brunswickers and British led by Duke Ferdinand of Brunswick. However, the Allies were repulsed with heavy losses and the French advanced through Westphalia to Minden.
