To take pressure off the British in Madras, Governor Robert Clive of Bengal sent Colonel Francis Forde south from Calcutta to support Raja Ananda Raj against the French under Herbert de Brienne Comte de Conflans. After victory at Condore, Forde besieged then stormed the key coastal town of Masulipatam. Conflans surrendered with almost 3,000 men.
