A few days after Mexican forces seized American sailors for allegedly going ashore at Tampico without permission, American Marines under Colonel John Lejeune seized Veracruz on reports that the German ship Ypiranga was landing arms for President Victoriano Huerta. About 200 Mexicans died attempting to resist the Marines and Huerta soon fled into exile.
