With Federal forces falling back in central Mexico after disaster at Torréon (3 April), rebel General Francisco (Pancho) Villa detoured to attack a strong government position at Paredón, north of Saltillo. After a total rout in which more than half the government troops became casualties or deserted, the Federal garrison abandoned Saltillo and Villa advanced on Zacatecas.
