After taking Chihuahua in December 1913, Francisco (Pancho) Villa led a large force against Torréon in central Mexico. The city, which he had won and lost the previous year, was now defended by veteran Federal General José Refugio Velasco. Villa lost heavy casualties in some of the hardest fighting of the revolution before the Federals escaped in a sudden dust-storm.
