Frederick II of Prussia was marching towards Berlin after cutting his way out of Liegnitz (15 August) when he turned to attack Austrian Marshal Leopold von Daun south of the capital at Torgau. The Austrians were driven across the Elbe in a disorganised action which continued into the night. It was Frederick’s bloodiest victory and both sides withdrew to winter quarters.
