Marching into eastern Pussia through Orlau-Frankenau, Russian General Aleksander Samsonov advanced on Paul von Hindenburg near Tannenberg (Grunwald, Poland). Samsonov committed suicide after the complte destruction of the Russian Second Army to a double envelopment. Hindenburg then turned north to destroy another Russian army at the Masurian Lakes.
