As Austrian commander Franz Conrad von Hotzendorf invaded eastern Poland, his northern flank secured Krasnik, while the centre under General Moritz von Auffenberg attacked the Russian Fifth Army around Komárow. The Russians were defeated and fell back to avoid encirclement. Further south, they quickly counter-attacked across the Gnila Lipa towards Lemberg.
