After defeat at Speicher in northeast Switzerland (May 1403), the Habsburg Abbot Cuno of St Gall sought aid from Duke Frederick IV of Austria to suppress rebellion in Appenzell. Near Stoss, south of Lake Constance, rebels under Rudolf of Werdenberg destroyed the advancing Imperial army from the heights above. Frederick withdrew and Appenzell joined the Swiss League.
