Decebalus of Dacia once more resumed war against Rome and Emperor Trajan crossed the Danube, where he routed the Dacian army outside the capital Sarmizegethusa (modern Varhély). Decebalus fled to the north but was eventually surrounded and killed himself, ending the war. Rome then annexed and settled Dacia, which largely comprised the area of modern Romania.
