at a glance

coordinates unknown

location

modern country

When Rome constructed a new colony named Aelia Capitolina on the site of ancient Jersualem, Jews rebelled against Emperor Hadrian. Led by Simon Bar-Cocheba (the <i>"second Judas Maccabeus"</i>—claimed by some to be the Messiah), they seized Aelia and held it for two years until the city fell by storm to Julius Severus. The Jewish rebellion was then crushed with extreme severity.
