After Sir Henry Percy Earl of Northumberland invaded Scotland and burned Dunbar in May 1448, the Scots burned his family castles at Alnwick and Warkworth. Henry VI then gave him troops for a fresh invasion. However, at the River Sark, near Gretna on the Solway Firth, Northumberland was defeated by Scots under Hugh Douglas Earl of Ormond and taken prisoner.
