Amid confusion following the death of Filippo Visconti Duke of Milan, his son-in-law Francesco Sforza secured Borgomanero, northwest of Milan, which was then attacked by his rival, Duke Ludovico of Savoy. In a famous defence by Bartolomeo Colleoni, the army of Savoy was badly beaten, and Ludovico had to withdraw. Sforza then besieged Milan and later became Duke.
