With victory at Las Guásimas, American commander William R. Shafter advanced on the key city of Santiago de Cuba, where he soon captured the outer defences at San Juan Hill. Following total destruction of the Spanish fleet in Santiago Bay, General José Toral negotiated to surrender the city and also troops in outlying areas, virtually ending the war in Cuba.
