American forces which captured San Juan Hill outside Santiago de Cuba (1 July), threatened the Spanish fleet in Santiago Bay and Admiral Pascual Cervera was ordered to attempt a breakout. Met by part of the American blockading squadron under Commodore Winfield S. Schley, Cervera lost all seven of his ships with terrible casualties. Santiago soon surrendered.
