At the start of the war, 2,000 ill-armed rebels in Nueva Ecija under Mariano Llanera and Pantaleon Belmonte seized the town of San Isidro and besieged Governor Leonardo Walls and the Spanish garrison in their barracks. However, Major Lopez Arteaga arrived with reinforcements next day and the Patriots were driven out after a brutal all-night counter-attack.
