As South African forces invaded German Southwest Africa, General Henry Lukin in the south took Raman Drift on the Orange, while Colonel Ronald Grant advanced upriver to Sandfontein. Attacked by German Colonel Joachim von Heydebreck, the South Africans suffered heavy losses and surrendered. A need to deal with a Boer rising then stalled the Allied campaign.
