During the English siege of Orleans, a wagon convoy of supplies commanded by Sir John Fastolfe (including barrels of fish for Lent) was attacked at Rouvray, east of Avallon, by a French-Scottish force under Etienne de Vignolles <i>"La Hire"</i> and Count Charles of Clermont. The attackers were driven off with heavy losses in an action known as the <i>"Battle of the Herrings"</i>.
