In the wake of English repulse at Montgisard, Thomas Montacute Earl of Salisbury arrived with fresh troops to besiege Orleans, where he was killed by a cannon shot, then succeeded by William de la Pole Earl of Suffolk. Orleans was then reinforced by Jean Count of Dunois, and Suffolk’s besieging army withdrew after defeat by Jeanne d’Arc and Jean Duke of Alencon.
