Louis XIV of France sent his son, the Dauphin Louis, to invade Germany and most of the Palatinate quickly surrendered. However Philippsburg, south of Heidelberg, held out under the Count Ernst von Starhemberg. Utilising the siegecraft of Marshal Sebastien Vauban, the Dauphin forced the surrender of Philippsburg after a month of terrible assault.
