In support of deposed James II of England, Louis XIV of France sent a large fleet to Ireland with supplies and reinforcements. While Marquis Francois de Chateaurenault was unloading in Bantry Bay, County Cork, he was attacked by Admiral Arthur Herbert Earl of Torrington. The English squadron was badly mauled and the French returned safely to Brest.
