Moving up the Nile to reconquer the Sudan and avenge the death of General Charles Gordon at Khartoum in 1885, General Herbert Kitchener’s British-Egyptian-Sudanese army defeated the Mahdists at the Atbara, then met the Khalifa Abdullah-al-Taaishi at Omdurman (Karala), near Khartoum. The Dervish army was destroyed, with perhaps 10,000 dead and 15,000 wounded.
