As Dervish forces withdrew up the Blue Nile after defeat at Omdurman (2 September), about 4,000 men under Emir Saadallah were intercepted at Gedaref by Colonel Charles Parsons, who had marched across the Atbara from eastern Sudan. The Dervishes were defeated in hard fighting with about 500 dead and Parsons then held Gedaref against a counter-attack by Ahmed Fedil.
