A few days after James II failed at Londonderry in northern Ireland, he sent Justin Macarthy Viscount Mountcashel to conclude the siege of Protestant Enniskillen on Lough Erne. However, at nearby Newtown Butler, Macarthy’s Catholics were routed by Colonel William Wolesley, losing over 1,000 killed, 500 captured and all their cannon. Enniskillen was saved.
