General Karl von Bulow led over 100,000 Germans sweeping through Belgium to attack the supposedly impregnable fortress at Namur, defended by about 37,000 Belgians under General Augustin Michel. Following bombardment by heavy artillery used at Liège, Namur fell with thousands captured, just two days after French defeat at nearby Charleroi.
